Hunting
Dog Training!
A
hunting dog refers to any dog who
assists humans in hunting. There are
several types of hunting dogs developed
for the many tasks hunters require
that they fulfill. The major categories
of a hunting canine include hounds,
terriers, curs type dogs, and gun
dogs. Among these categories further
divisions can be made based upon the
skill sets that the dogs possess.
Hunters
with dogs report the satisfaction
that the dogs seem to exhibit. Excitement
is evident as they see the hunters
load weapons, take to the field, and
begin the hunt.
Using
food to teach your hunting canine
new things is usually very effective,
however, depending on the dog the
answer could be “yes”,
“no”. Using food is to
motivate the dog and some dog’s,
food doesn’t work well at all
because the food becomes too motivating,
and they can’t think about anything
else.
When a dog is new to you, is a puppy,
it makes sense to train with food.
Rewards other than food require that
you and the canine work out a mutual
language.
A handler will build in rewards. Once
a canine learns to retrieve, the actions
of chasing the item and carrying it
in return for bringing it back become
rewarding. The retrieve is an example
of a task you might train with food
rewards and no longer need food rewards
later. The retrieve often then becomes
a reward you can use for training
other tasks.
